Introducing DeskFamiliar

Most AI agent interfaces show text after the fact. You send a request, you wait, and eventually an answer scrolls past. What actually happened in between — the files read, the commands run, the moments where the agent hesitated — stays invisible.

DeskFamiliar starts from a different idea: an AI agent with a body should not only answer. It should show what it is doing.

DeskFamiliar is a 3D desktop AI companion that gives Agent work a visible body. Hermes Agent powers the complete built-in experience: Hermes is the mind; DeskFamiliar is the body. When the Agent reads files, your companion opens a book and studies. When it writes, the character casts a writing spell. When a risky action needs approval, the character looks to you and waits. The whole loop — idle, reading, writing, waiting, completed, error — is readable at a glance, from across the room.

Codex and Claude Code also connect out of the box for local character visualization. Developers can connect other Agents through the MIT-licensed open-source bridge, using an adapter or a Windows local process plugin.

The first version ships with four familiars: Lumen, an easygoing everyday companion; Mochi, a round British Shorthair; and two historical minds, Newton and Einstein. The base app is free on Steam for Windows 10/11, with a built-in AI that only needs your Steam account — a free quota refreshes monthly, and one-time quota packs are there when you need more.

DeskFamiliar is an independent project and is not affiliated with Nous Research or the official Hermes Agent team. Wishlist us on Steam, and come say hello.
